How much space do I need?
A standard classroom, workshop, or Design & Technology space is enough for most schools. You'll need enough room to have the chassis out and accessible, with space to move around it and lay out components during each session. Normally a minimum of a 3x3m space is sufficient. You don't need a large workshop, but a cramped space will slow your build down and make some of the final steps, like: fitting bodywork and tyres, for example, harder than they need to be.
Do I need a permanent space for the kart?
No, not at all. In fact many schools have the bear frame of the kart either leant-up against a wall, hung onto the wall, or on display in reception between sessions. Students then go and collect the frame at the start of each session and then set it down onto a desk/table to work on that module. All of the components for each module can be easily stored away in a normal medium sized cupboard.
However, if you can secure a permanent spot, that is a bonus and a luxury, and a real nice-to-have at least for the duration of the build. Because your kart is assembled in stages across the year, so having it live in one place, rather than needing to pack it away and reset between sessions, will save your team time. If a permanent space genuinely isn't possible, make sure wherever you use is safe for unattended, part-built components between sessions.
Where do I store the Kart Kit and parts?
Keep unused components in their original packaging where possible; the component bags are numbered and correspond to the build modules, so keeping them organised makes each session easier to start. All of the components for each module can be easily stored away in a normal medium sized cupboard. Taking care to remove the brake fluid from the Kart Kit and store it in a secure location, we recommend the Science chemical store cupboard for example. The kart chassis frame itself can be leant on-end vertically against the wall, or hooked onto a wall with ladder hooks, or on display somewhere prominent for all of the school community to witness it’s exciting progress step-by-step. Do keep is all somewhere dry and secure… lots of the shiny go-kart parts can be very interesting!
Do I need a kart stand or trolley?
Not essential, but many schools find one useful, particularly once the kart has wheels fitted and needs moving between storage and your working area. These are available through the Club Shop.
How should we store brake fluid safely?
Brake fluid should be stored securely, in its original sealed container, upright, and away from general student access. Treat it the same way you would any other classroom chemical or COSHH item. If you're unsure of your school's storage protocol, your site H&S lead will be able to advise alongside our own guidance.
